Below are a list of definitions of words we use quite regularly, and take for granted that everybody understands.
Wellbeing
A physically and mentally healthy and positive quality of life.
Indicators of wellbeing are similar to those used in engaging and promoting a quality of life; confidence, new experiences and encouraging new, exciting opportunities.
(Definition of the definition- Wellbeing is more than just health. It’s about how you feel day to day, whether you’re stressed, unhappy or content.
Towards the end of 2010 the government became rather keen on wellbeing, and struggled valiantly to try and define it. They decided that wellbeing is dictated by connecting with other people; being active; taking notice of the world around you; continuing to learn; giving your time/ money/ smiles to someone else.)
Communities
Groups of individuals, brought together through interest and / or geographic location.
(Definition of the definition- Communities are everywhere, and are not just defined by where you live. A community of Harley Davidson enthusiasts can live miles apart, but are brought together into a community by a particular interest.)
Leadership
The process of taking the initiative, being energised and forward thinking. Understanding if management is needed and how to best facilitate partnerships, steering groups or individuals.
(Definition of the definition- This can be anything from chairing an event or discussion, to organising a consortium of organisations, and everything in between.)
Conversations/ Partnerships
Open dialogue which can be both informal and formal between organisations, individuals and communities.
(Definition of the definition- Again this covers a broad range of different things. It could just mean having a one-to-one with somebody and talking about their professional or personal needs, or having long term communications with other organisations about projects and partnerships.)
Creativity
An individual’s (natural) process of exploration, experimentation and enjoyment, whilst developing new skills through different artforms and media.
(Definition of the definition- Russian psychologist, Lev Vygotsky, said ‘Creativity exists not only [in] great historical works, but also everywhere human imagination combines, changes, and creates anything new.’)
Change
This encompasses both the positive and negative change that can occur.
